INTERVIEW
Are there any particular artists, cultures, or experiences that have shaped your musical identity?
S FLY: I’d say the artists who inspire me are Shimza and James Hype their style and aura definitely is similar to mine. South African and UK house music has definitely shaped my playing style, I merge to two to bring in my unique playing style. I just recently went to Kenya and South Africa and that gave me a whole new perspective on the journey of music and how to put my own sprinkle of it, was so enlightening!
What’s your approach to curating a mix—do you follow a structure, or is it more instinctive?
S FLY: It depends on my mood but most times before a mix I play around with songs, new and old and figure out a flow and on the day have some fun!
How do you balance playing what you love versus what the crowd expects?
S FLY: That can be challenging however I have learnt to read to room and always be able to give the crowd some of what they want and also what I want.
Is there a particular genre or sound you’re currently exploring or excited about?
S FLY : 3 Step / Afrohouse and Afrotech is what I am excited about currently.
The music industry can be intense. How do you take care of your mental and emotional well-being?
S FLY: The best advice I can give is focus on yourself, block out the noise as difficult as it will be you have to walk your own path and believe that what you work on it may take time but shall workout in the end.
What keeps you inspired and motivated when you hit creative or personal challenges?
S FLY: God helps me a lot as personal challenges have been tough in the last year but God has always got me through it all.
Beyond music, how do you see yourself in the world, what drives you and your purpose?
S FLY: My everyday life is music and events so I cant escape it. My drive and purpose is fuelled by wanting to be the best I can be and finishing what I start.
Do you think electronic music is becoming more inclusive? What progress do you hope to see?
S FLY: I think it is taking a bit of time, as it is quite guarded which is understandable however more events are entering the space so that’s progress.
If you could create your dream lineup for an event, who would be on it?
S FLY: S FLY, Shimza, Dlala Thukzin Black Coffee.
What’s a festival, venue, or city you dream of performing at, and why?
S FLY: Tomorrowland has been a dream of mine, I love how futuristic the festival is and that is my number two. My number one festival shall be my own one that I headline.
Outside of DJing, do you have any creative or personal projects you’re passionate about?
S FLY: Yes but my goal is to sell out my own stadium
