INTERVIEW

What first drew you to DJing, and how has your sound evolved over time?

LEXII: What drew me to DJing was hearing sounds that felt like they came straight from my own mind, and watching how a DJ can completely shift a room’s energy. I wanted to share the vibes in my head, see who else connected with them, and master the craft- blends , excitement - performance quality -control of the sound. For me, it’s about creating a moment people can feel and then express , it’s a rush like Fully gets me going  . The same way I would / will / have when I’m on the dance floor.

How would you describe the emotions or energy you try to bring to your sets?

LEXII: The energy I bring to a set is all about excitement and anticipation , intricate moments that end in unexpected musical euphoria. Haha that’s the stuff really excites me and in turn I hope energises an audience , I want everyone to feel really good, like the kind of good that makes you want to let loose - and move.

Are there any particular artists, cultures, or experiences that have shaped your musical identity?

LEXII: It might sound cliché, but seeing DJs who aren’t afraid to blur genre lines and play what feels authentic has shaped me massively - especially in places like , Berlin, and the London scene - northern house scene - queer life and rave culture and freeness - as I was growing up - I’ve tapped that freedom of expression into my own upbringing in the East Midlands and the North, mixing my family’s Caribbean heritage and older  cousins’ love for R&B, hip-hop, speedy garage, and bassline into my sound. All of it’s inspired my musical identity. I really hope that that shows . The eclectic chaos . But with method xx

What’s your approach to curating a mix do you follow a structure, or is it more instinctive?

LEXII: For me, the opening of a mix is everything , it’s my way of saying, I’m here, meet me where I’m at. I’ll lock in those first three tracks until they hit just right, because I want to grab you instantly. From there, it flows, but every moment ,even the curveballs have to feel  intentional and undeniably me. Very important to me .

How do you balance playing what you love versus what the crowd expects?

LEXII: I think reading the room and finding that sweet spot between what I love and where you love to be is an underrated skill, and I pride myself on it. When I’m freestyle mixing, it has to feel true to me, but it also has to entertain ,DJing is a craft, sure, but it’s also a show. I see it as my job to bridge that gap, keep the energy right, and that the choices are hitting for u , and me ! But that’s definitely a LIVE in person skill that comes with time and still gets me kinda nervous . But it’s part of the thrill I guess .

Is there a particular genre or sound you’re currently exploring or excited about?

LEXII: Right now, I’m excited by blurring genre lines that’s always been my thing. Instead of just finding the song to tell my story, I’m making it through blends or my own productions ( which I’ve begun - Lexii x Sport mode - Luv spaceship will be making the rounds soon-Haha , Lately, I’m really feeling hardgroove and high-energy tracks made purely for the club . I was a dancer before anything else, so if the music doesn’t make me want to move, it feels flat to me. That physical connection is always in my mind when I’m feeling something out .

The music industry can be intense. How do you take care of your mental and emotional well-being?

LEXII: Honestly, I wish I’d thought about that more before stepping into the music industry ,but I love learning and figuring out how to navigate and conquer new spaces. It can feel like a game of chess, but when it gets heavy, I lean on my amazing friends, family, bf and hobbies. Yoga, working out, and looking after my body keep me grounded when the madness is happening, so I can keep hustling to make my little dreams come true. I’m super driven I just need a cute word from my people most importantly MY MUM and I’m usually back at it .  I’m definitely of the culture where if my mum says it’s okay-it’s okay. And I can keep it moving after that with no qualms lol.

What keeps you inspired and motivated when you hit creative or personal challenges?

LEXII: People, past life experiences ,they inspire me constantly. We often look outside ourselves for inspiration, but so much of it is in our own story. I like to go back to a time when I wasn’t overthinking, when I didn’t care as much, and find the musical cues in that - like there is Literally so much Gold in our own journeys . then translate them into the present. The hope is that someone else connects with it too haha and that’s the point, really. That’s how you find your tribe, the people who truly vibe with you, and they don’t even know it but they are vibing with so many different parts of you - and that’s what keeps me inspired - that’s an exciting thought to me - sounds verrrry wet but you get me .

Beyond music, how do you see yourself in the world? What drives you and your purpose?

LEXII: Beyond music, I see myself as an inquisitive soul on a journey of constant enlightenment - like I want all the answers - I wanna learn and I want time to do cos that excites me.

My purpose is simple: to live well, treat people kindly, and share as much love, joy, and good energy as I can while I’m here. I want to stay curious, challenge perceptions, and help people and myself while remaining  authentic #peoplesprincess hahah

Have you faced any challenges in the industry that shaped the way you approach your craft?

LEXII: One of the biggest challenges is dodging other people’s pigeonholes. Everyone’s got a version of who they think I am  or I am like — and sometimes it’s nothing like the real me. The trick is moving forward, finding that balance between getting ahead and staying true, and not letting the noise get in my head. Cos I am a OVERTHINKER dowwwwn - however Being visible means being perceived, and that’s a constant learning curve. But I believe in divine timing, so even the tricky moments have their reason. We keep it moving .

Do you think electronic music is becoming more inclusive? What progress do you hope to see?

LEXII: Electronic music has always had diversity at its core , it’s meant to be for everyone. I think it’s becoming more inclusive, but commercially it’s still not doing enough to recognise and platform the wide range of talent out there. I feel - that’s my Opinion - There are incredible artists across every sub-genre, from all walks of life, and they deserve to be heard simply because they’re great, not just to tick an ‘inclusive’ box. Music is for everyone, and electronic music should reflect that on every level.

How do you navigate spaces where you might feel underrepresented or overlooked?

LEXII: When I’m in spaces where I feel underrepresented or overlooked, I have to walk it like I talk it. ‘if not me, then who?’ and If I’m the first of ‘me’ in the room , then it’s important to show up with my head held high so there’s no misunderstanding what I’m bringing . People can have their opinions, but if I’ve got the chance to be seen and heard , I’d aim to make it count. I can be crazy insecure, especially with my creativity, but there eventually comes a time where I feel it’s important - to go after what you want . If I want it , then I’m gonna have to act like it ! Lol I’ll always do my best to keep to these mantras, though I’m fully aware that it’s always easier said than done , and it definitely DO take nerve ! So in short I guess I always do my best to represent for myself the best way I know can.

If you could create your dream lineup for an event, who would be on it?

LEXII: “My dream lineup would be a mash-up of all the sounds that have inspired me along the way. I couldn’t pin it down to just one genre, but I’d have to include Ollie Ran — my first-ever DJ teacher and still an incredible UK Garage selector — and Midland, who’s been so supportive and whose sound is uniquely blended and international. I’d want to show love to the queer community and bring in friends like Mina Galan , who’s got such a fresh perspective in the electronic scene right now. Honestly, I’d fill it with my friends and they all know who they are ! and the people who root for me — if we’re friends, it’s probably because I rate you, and I’d want you in anything I create. Cos I appreciate you , so just check my follower list - I love em all

Haha

What’s a festival, venue, or city you dream of performing at, and why?

LEXII: I’d love to play anywhere from Panorama Bar at Berghain to Glastonbury (just ’cause), Houghton, Honcho, Ladyland, Outlook Festival… honestly, of course I’d love the big stages, but what really excites me is travelling, stepping into new spaces, and figuring out how to fit my sound into their vibe. I love an objective, I love a challenge - it’s so fun finding that sweet spot between what I do and what the crowd’s taste level is. The pay off aswell When u nail it and get a dm that says your set was fire and your like ‘gotcha ‘ haha Music’s for everybody, and the music I bring is for everyone. I’m not here to be boxed in by industry limitations , if you get a chance to hear me, I know I can make you want it and like it. You’ve just gotta get into it, babe.

Outside of DJing, do you have any creative or personal projects you’re passionate about?

LEXII: Honestly, I just like to keep moving. I’m happiest when I’m doing something physical ,going for long walks, sports, yoga, whatever gets me out of my head. I can be such an overthinker sometimes that it gets crowded up there, so I make sure I have things that pull me back into the moment. That could be learning a new skill, getting lost in a documentary, having a belly laugh with my best friends, or watching a film that completely captivates me. For whatever reason that is - could be anything .I love anything that makes me forget about the hustle for a minute. Surrounding myself with people and moments that do that for me keeps me grounded ,and it’s in those unplugged moments that I feel most like myself.
