INTERVIEW
How would you describe the emotions or energy you try to bring to your sets?
MS.RENEGADE: I’m a Pisces lol so I’m very emotionally driven. And my energy and emotions shift all the time. I’m constantly back and forth between a harder and softer side of myself. But when I play I like to go in with energy, I like to play my music loud and fast!
But I’m also working on letting myself play a bit calmer and not going all in - I’d like to explore that side of myself more.
What’s your approach to curating a mix—do you follow a structure, or is it more instinctive?
MS.RENEGADE: Creating a mix is emotion driven for me, it always starts with a song that immediately feels right. And that kind of sets the tone for the kind of set I’m going to build. I can’t explain it it’s just a feeling. So definitely instinctive.
And looking back it’s nice to see how different mixes represent different eras of my sound.
How do you balance playing what you love versus what the crowd expects?
MS.RENEGADE: I always want the crowd to enjoy themselves but I think it’s easier for me to give them that when I play what I love. I see it as finding OUR energy. I read the crowd after every selection and I see what part of me they want lol.
Is there a particular genre or sound you’re currently exploring or excited about?
MS.RENEGADE: New genres all the time!! But I’m especially excited by the way club music from Latin America is evolving right now.
The music industry can be intense. How do you take care of your mental and emotional well-being?
MS.RENEGADE: Yes it is, I barely drink alcohol, maybe 1-2 times a year. And I think that helps a lot.
And it’s important for me to have healthy routines, so working out and sauna 3-4 days a week is a must.
Hanging out with my friends, my partner, my cats, going to the movies, resting and enjoying life.
And also going out and dancing without working is so important for me.
What keeps you inspired and motivated when you hit creative or personal challenges?
MS.RENEGADE: All of the above, reseting and getting some perspective.
I also feel a change of scenery helps a lot. But it’s not really financially sustainable to book a trip every time I feel uninspired. So going out for a run and 30 min sauna sometimes does the work. Did I mention I am part Finnish?
Beyond music, how do you see yourself in the world—what drives you and your purpose?
MS.RENEGADE: This is a big question, lol. But what really drives me is community and love, creating spaces where people feel like they truly belong, not just on the dancefloor but beyond that too.
I think my role in a way, is about building those spaces and making people feel seen. Ever since I was in school, I’ve been drawn to that, organizing discos for younger students, or later when I was at community college, founding an environmental council to give people hope and work on political action while bringing people together.
That same thread continues into the dancefloor and everything I do. I guess that’s the red thread running through it all.
Have you faced any challenges in the industry that shaped the way you approach your craft?
MS.RENEGADE: Yes definitely, in the beginning of my dj journey I felt I got boxed in really quickly. And I like to be free, my taste is all over the place and my sound isn’t just one genre. So that was a bit of a challenge. I decided to rebrand myself and create my own path basically and stop letting people decide for me, and that’s how I went from Bianca to Ms. Renegade.
And obviously as a Latinx and female dj it’s harder to navigate this male dominated space, but I try to focus on how I can create spaces that are a part of a solution and work with representation in all my projects. Basically being a part of the solution rather than focusing on the problem.
When I host my own events and projects I mainly work with non male djs because it sets a different tone.
Do you think electronic music is becoming more inclusive? What progress do you hope to see?
MS.RENEGADE: For sure! I do think things are moving in the right direction, especially when it comes to visibility and who gets to take up space. But there’s still a lot of work to do.
I’d love to see more long-term change, not just trends. More diversity in lineups, but also in who gets to curate, book, and shape the spaces. And creating safer and more intentional environments where people actually feel welcome, not just included on paper.
How do you navigate spaces where you might feel underrepresented or overlooked?
MS.RENEGADE:I try not to focus too much on that energy, because it can easily mess with your confidence. Instead I focus on what I bring into a room.
I trust my taste, my energy, and my perspective, and I remind myself that I’m there for a reason. And if a space doesn’t feel right, I don’t force it, I’d rather put my energy into spaces I’m building myself or that actually align with me.
What’s a festival, venue, or city you dream of performing at, and why?
MS.RENEGADE: I would love to one day play at Glastonbury, or The Warehouse project - I’ve only yet played in London in the UK so it would be sick to see how the rest of the UK moves. But I also love intimate spaces! I’ve heard Manchester’s and Bristol’s music scene is sick so definitely there. And also I would love to go to South America to check out the club scene and see how my sound resonates.
Outside of DJing, do you have any creative or personal projects you’re passionate about?
MS.RENEGADE: I have so many creative outlets, I think it’s a must to balance out life. I love fashion and how it helpes me express my energy, sometimes I make my own clothes but without any professional training. It’s always from an impulse. I have this obsession with IKEA, my home is basically a vintage IKEA Museum. I love scrolling through their catalogues from the 50’s-now and basically know them by heart. Interior design is something that really inspires me.
I also used to study film so I love documenting through film even though it is just a hobby, when I have the time and energy I try to work with that. And I love music in every shape and form, learning how to produce, curating new kinds of events, creating spaces that go beyond a DJ set. Working with it in any way feels amazing, and there's still so much I want to explore.
